Comment on PTSD in Teachers: Yes, It’s Real! by Kelly https://theeducatorsroom.com/ptsd-in-teachers-yes-its-real/#comment-173449 Sun, 03 Dec 2023 13:30:05 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=32586#comment-173449 I’m a 30 year veteran of teaching. Each year it got more and more stressful until I finally began meds for depression, then later for anxiety. It’s not one thing. It’s everything, every day. Just being responsible for the learning gains of 25+ kids is stressful enough. Long hours, little sleep, not a lot of me time, trading family time to prepare for those kids who expect to be “entertained.” District coming in for “fidelity checks,” admins with a 42 point evaluation tool. Lesson plans, grades, individual education plans, conferences, 15 minutes of “lunch and pee time,” parents threatening you in the parking lot, over the phone, in an email, the child who constantly yells, curses, threatens and perpetrates violence all day while another child just doesn’t want to do anything. Meanwhile, learning gains are not happening, the violent child that you had go to the office came right make and brags about how they got candy, and your admin gaslights you about how you’re not doing enough, or you’re too worried about other students, or you’re ineffective.

And THEN there’s the shooter drills, and the politicians, and popular opinion ALL THE TIME, year after year. And how are those learning gains coming (did I mention Covid)? There used to be mild problems like kids just WOULDN’T shut up for lessons (no learning gains), but more and more over the last several years children care less, their overall behavior is worse, EBD classes have been discontinued, so they’re in your class, now, their parents are scarier, admins are nastier, and society blames you for everything, then degrades and demoralizes you.

Why did I continue to do it, you ask? For the children. I truly enjoy them. We (particularly women-the majority of the education workforce) are expected to do more for others and ignore what troubles us. We’re weak if we can’t handle it or even worse, we’re selfish. I finally retired from teacher after 30 years. Teaching provided me with the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I miss it dearly, but in the last 2 years, I did develop PTSD. Now, I needed MORE anxiety meds just to get to school. I finally had to call it, because I knew I truly wasn’t being as effective as I once was, and my mental health was genuinely in danger of shattering me.

I retired in June, and I’m still not recovered, but I’m trying, and I’m working– Not a career, but a job. Not changing lives, but not killing myself, either. My father always told me that everything is relative. Of course, it is. What that means is that my experiences are my own, and I can only relate them to what I know. When a baby cries because it’s hungry, that is THE WORST thing that baby has EVER known. It’s SURVIVAL for them. I understand that I never saw anyone blow up. I’ve never killed anyone. But my constant, and some years, relentless expectations from EVERYONE, threats, and stress have taken their toll. And to me, THAT is very real. For me, it WAS survival.

Ive recently read “Readicide” by Kelly Gallagher and the reminders for us to keep authenticity at the fore of our work is never lost on good teachers. Well done.

Comment on The Need for Restorative Justice: The Zwerner and Taylor Story by Ann Marie https://theeducatorsroom.com/the-need-for-restorative-justice-the-zwerner-and-taylor-story/#comment-172660 Fri, 17 Nov 2023 17:18:01 +0000 https://theeducatorsroom.com/?p=43591#comment-172660 I would offer a different perspective living in a county that is riddled by heroin and other addictions that is demographically majority white. There is no gentle way to handle addictions and the consequences that result. Addicts and parents in need of help are offered multiple resources and tremendous amounts of money are used for rehabilitation. Does there need to be more help? Yes, but as a teacher I do not see restorative justice ( which we are using poorly in our educational system), fixing a tragic event like a school that ignored a young boy who was violent, uncared for, or his addict mother. The school system is not supposed to fix the issues of society and yet here we are. Teachers are being hit, injured, shot, threatened and there are not direct consequences for these actions. If I did any of those things as an adult there would be consequences in my job; I’d be fired. Children need consequences to learn how to behave; good parents know this. It works for so many kids. If parents who are addicts can’t control or care for their children then schools should be able to impart better consequences to make up for the lack of structure at home. We need more kids going to schools that specialize in behavioral issues and not integrated into general education where they are not receiving the help they need. I did not train to become a social worker, a psychologist, a behavioral therapist, but yet here we are; everyday being asked to focus my attention on 4 or 5 in a class of 30 that require all my attention to make sure they don’t injure, insult and that they learn. Restorative justice is not the answer in the most egregious situations, such as injuring or shooting another human being.
